Dad's Burial Place in Prescott

Dad's Burial Place in Prescott On April 8th as he was driving from Phoenix to Tuba City for the last part of his Amizade Adventure, Lee detoured to Prescott to take photos for me of the mausoleum where Dad's ashes are interred. I've been there, but he wanted to take some photos for me. I couldn't remember the exact location, although I knew what the place looked like, so I found it on Google Earth and directed Lee there by phone. It was a fun way to find it.

Dad's Burial Place in Prescott The trees and plants have gotten bigger since I was there last, although it still looks bare to me. Lee talked with the pastors (both women), and Pastor Carol said they'd look into tidying the place up and making it look more cared-for. She said there had been a wind-storm recently, but the fountain looked abandoned, etc.

Dad's Burial Place in Prescott The mausoleum is between the two church buildings, and this side is facing the street.

March 14: Photos of Dad and the kids

I've just scanned a few of the older photos of Dad and us when I was young, and I've put them in this new family album. Right now I'm working on putting them on Dad's blog. It's harder, because I want to make the dates work with the blog software, and it's a work-around, sometimes confusing. I'm focusing on pictures of Dad today, because it's the date he passed away six years ago. It's hard to believe it's been six years already. This picture of me on Dad's shoulders was probably taken at the beach about 1950. We used to enjoy going down for the day or for a week in summer when we got older.

Tripping

Sue and I are beginning our trip to Florida, where we were invited to visit one of the Tapir and Friends Gift Shop's vendors, Safari Ltd. We got up early to get to the airport in Portland, and it wasn't until our layover somewhere in the middle of the country (I'd have to look it up since I'm posting at a much later date) that I realized I'd been wearing my shirt inside out.

January 11 is also my Dad's birthday, and I've felt sad on that day since he died. I like to remember the day somehow. He loved flying and taking trips, and so do I.

April 4, Part 1: Views from the deck, Prescott, Arizona

Needless to say, the weather was nice and it was a good place to relax and enjoy the view. The deck runs across the width of the back of the house. I don't think I'd want to live in Prescott, but it's a change of pace - climate, ecology, everything. And as I've said in other posts about this trip, it was all about the people. Getting to enjoy this nice scene was a plus.

More views from the deck. The first and second are looking approximately northwest.

This one is probably approximately northwest also.

Here's looking south.

And north.

And maybe southwest through the dining room window.

April 4, Part 2: Playing pool in Dad's basement, Prescott

I have one sister and one brother. Here they are: Kathy and Gary playing pool in Dad's basement in Prescott, Arizona. It was a special weekend. We hadn't all been together in I-don't-know-how-many years. We all visited Dad this weekend and we had a great time being together. I'm only putting this one photo up tonight, but that weekend we also went to the zoo and just sat around their house with the beautiful panoramic view joking a lot and enjoying each other's company in a way that hadn't been possible for a long time. It was a bittersweet time - mellow and nice, but with a sense that it wasn't going to happen this way again, because Dad had Alzheimer's and was clearly getting worse. He was still well enough on this visit to play pool (without too much attention to the rules) and to laugh and have a good time with us. He always enjoyed good humor - gentle, funny, and not too much poking fun at anyone. Anyway, that weekend was special.

On the left is Dad in the foreground and Gary behind him. Kathy is on the right. This is their living room with the front door at ground level and the hillside sloping steeply away so the side of the room opposite the front door goes out onto a high deck overlooking the trees and the valley.

In the mirror you can see Lois's back in the pink robe and someone who had come in. I don't think that was Kathy. The yellow-trimmed quilt is one I bought for Dad in Palisade. It has trout on it, and he always enjoyed fishing. I thought it would be nice and cheerful during his illness.

I'll put up a few more pictures from this visit eventually, but I regret there aren't any really good ones of the PEOPLE. For some reason, it's so hard for me to take them. I'm going to work on that in the next phase of my life - more people pictures.

February 2009: I'm adding a couple more pix of the basement, where I felt comfortable. On some visits I slept on the floor on a mattress, and on other visits in the guest room down there. It was roomy and there was a small deck out back. I liked the pool table, which had come with the house because nobody could figure out how to remove it. Dad grew up with a pool table in Corona. They had a family of four kids, and there were usually cousins around.

c. 1971: Pictures of Ted Todd

Theodore J. Todd Ted Todd ~ photos by Sheryl Todd

I don't know the date, and I'm only guessing the year, but it's approximately right. My dad needed a photo of himself to be printed in an agricultural journal, so he drove over to Claremont (California) and asked me to take a few. I don't remember if he had a meeting in the area that day, or only drove over for the photo. We went across Central Avenue from the house, where, quite conveniently, there was a lemon grove, and I took some photos with black and white film.

Theodore J. Todd I remember thinking that they were too high contrast, and I wished I'd had a chance to do them over, but of course now that so much time has passed, I'm just glad to have them at all.

Feb 22, 1951: Sheryl, Dad, Mom, and tricycle

My first tricycle. I wasn't as brave as Kathy was. I was probably scared, although I loved riding the trike later. In the picture are Ted, Betty, the tricycle, and Sheryl. It was in an envelope that was printed February 22, 1951. That would make Mom 7+ months pregnant with Kathy. I can't tell from the print date when the photo was taken. The dates weren't marked or printed on the photos. The picture was taken on the patio behind our house.

Dec 25, 1949: Sheryl and Dad at Grandma's house

I think I always liked dolls. Here is Dad playing on the floor with me, and this may be a doll I'd gotten for Christmas, I'm not sure about that. The date the photos were developed was December 29, 1949. Grandma's parents had brought Oriental rugs back to Corona after a trip around the world in 1910 and 1911. It looks like they were still in good shape after lots of use by 1949!
